I used many sources in my essay, “The Overpowering Benefits of Big Data on Healthcare,” as evidence to support my claims and main argument. There were three main ways I learned to integrate sources into my writing in this English 110 course including quoting, summarizing, and paraphrasing. Originally, in my social media essay, I found myself integrating the majority of my sources through quotations. However, in my Big Data essay, I used all three methods to integrate sources. For example, I wrote: “McFarland had a good point when he included a quote from the chief medical examiner at Geisinger Health System, Thomas Graf, that said: ‘It would be great if when the patient walked in our Bluetooth sensors picked up their phone and it pushed in all their exercises and diet history, and then there were analytics that was performed in real time….’” I introduced my quote by addressing the speaker and giving him credentials. I also used a template from the Little Seagull book to introduce my quote and make a smooth transition. After the quote, I clarified what was being said and showed how it supports my claim and main argument. Analyzing the evidence helps the readers understand the connection and importance of the integration.
